Israel is a country where arguing isn\u2019t a form of conflict – it\u2019s a way of life. People argue in line at the grocery store and over family dinners, in the Knesset and on the beach, on the radio, in Telegram chats, and just standing at a crosswalk. Who was right in 1948? Who started it in 1973? Who really owns this land, and where\u2019s the line between self-defense and aggression?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These conversations never stop – not for a day. Some repeat generation after generation, others are born out of new tragedies, new wars, new promises, and new disappointments. They feel endless, like the history of this place. Sometimes heated, sometimes just tired. But always alive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What you see here are fragments of that never-ending polyphony. Not conclusions, not positions. Just lines – no explanations, no reconciliation, no closure. Just like in a real Israeli argument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Tell me something – is it true that Israel doesn\u2019t fight states anymore? That all the wars in recent decades with militant groups and terrorist organizations?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Yeah, kinda seems that way. The last war with Lebanon and Syria ended in 1985.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“And is that why Israel is against a Palestinian state?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Wait a second, you want to give up the Golan? Do you even know what it was like there before 1967? That\u2019s our security!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Well, first of all, no, I don\u2019t want to. And second, are you really talking about security?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Of course I am! Those are dominant heights!”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Okay, now imagine this: not a single shot fired from there for five straight years. Not one. Do we give it up?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“No way. I don\u2019t trust the Arabs. The minute we leave, they\u2019ll start shooting again.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Okay, now picture American troops stationed there, the whole zone under international control. Five years and zero attacks. Officially, would you agree to give it up?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“No. Still no. I don\u2019t believe it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“See, but that actually could happen, and there are plenty of examples around the world. I think you just don\u2019t want to give up what blood was spilled for. Security\u2019s got nothing to do with it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Look. The formula\u2019s simple. There are a few million of them. Can we kill them all?”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“No.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCan we deport them?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“No.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCan we assimilate them?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“No.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSterilize them?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“No.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cExactly. Because all of that, they already tried on us – it didn\u2019t work. And what did it lead to?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cA lot of my conversations with Israelis end pretty quickly. After two or three questions – \u201cSo what\u2019s the plan?\u201d – people just shrug and say, \u201cIt\u2019s an endless war. We\u2019ll be fighting forever.\u201d And I\u2019m left wondering – where does that mindset come from? Why this built-in militarism?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOh, that\u2019s easy. They just haven\u2019t really fought yet.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTell me something, would you want to live in a Muslim state?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCould you?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNo, and I wouldn\u2019t want to!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cExactly. And they don\u2019t want to live in a Jewish state. Not in any way, under any conditions. So why are you trying to force them?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou know, since the dawn of time people came up with this sacred, universal thing. A border. Over here, we pray to Cthulhu. Over there, they don\u2019t kill mammoths. Here we keep Shabbat, and trains don\u2019t run. Over there, alcohol\u2019s banned and polygamy\u2019s allowed. That\u2019s normal. A border is just the area where our rules apply. The ones we invented.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhat\u2019s your point?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHere\u2019s the thing. There\u2019s not a single piece of land left on Earth that doesn\u2019t belong to some country. Not one. Except Antarctica, and maybe duty-free zones between borders. If you find one, show me. I\u2019ll move there tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOkay\u2026 and?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo, who does the West Bank belong to, exactly?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWait, hold up, you\u2019re planning to build a wall 18 kilometers from our house?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOkay, what makes you feel safer – a wall, or a checkpoint?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cProbably the wall.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThere you go.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cLet me paint you two pictures, and then I\u2019ll ask a question. The first one. Imagine a massive fence, guard towers, drones, laser cannons, and a no-go zone 500 meters out on either side. Anyone who gets close gets shot, no warning. Got it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhoa.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSecond picture – we all live together, side by side. Our villages, their villages, shared fields, shared roads. We plant together, we build together. Sure, sometimes under the watch of armed guards, but still. Got it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHmm. Okay\u2026 and?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNow tell me, which of those two is considered \u201cleft-wing\u201d ideology in Israel, and which is \u201cright-wing\u201d?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201c[suspicious] What are you trying to say?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m saying this is a flipped world. A fake narrative that saturates everything around us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhy do we settle beyond the line and fight there?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBecause that’s where our holy sites are \u2013 they\u2019re the essence of our nation!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBut I heard the Haredim don\u2019t want to serve in the army. So do the holy sites not matter to them? Or do they know a way to keep the sanctity without having to fight for it?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
